Nourishing your fertility journey during the holidays

Published in Nutritionist Resource on 27th of November The twinkling lights, the aroma of freshly baked mince pies and the warmth of family gatherings – Christmas is a time for joy and celebration. However, for those on a fertility journey, the festive season can also bring unique challenges. Balancing the merriment of the holidays with the dedication to your fertility treatment can seem daunting, but fear not! With mindful nutrition and a sprinkle of self-care, you can navigate this season with grace and keep your nutrition goals on track.

6 tips to support your fertility journey during the festive season

As a nutritionist specialising in fertility and mental health, I always make a point of improving our relationship with food and focusing on what we can put in rather than what we need to take out or indeed reducing food to calories and macros. Therefore my first tip when it comes to fertility nutrition around Christmas is to focus on balance and making sure you still get all the nutrients you need.

1. Embrace balance, not deprivation

Christmas is synonymous with indulgence, and it's absolutely OK to enjoy your favourite treats. The key lies in moderation and mindful choices. Opt for healthier versions of your beloved dishes, incorporating whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of fresh, colourful vegetables. This not only nurtures your body but also supports your fertility goals.

Can you add a starter salad before you have your usual Christmas meal? Can we add some extra veggies as an afternoon snack such as carrot sticks and hummus before we have those mince pies? Always look for opportunities to add in some extra goodness and nutrient-dense foods around the less nutritious but very enjoyable Christmas treats.

2. Stay hydrated

Amidst the festive cheer, it's easy to forget the importance of staying hydrated. Proper hydration supports all bodily functions, including reproductive health. Infuse your water with slices of fruits or herbs for a refreshing twist, making it easier to meet your daily intake goals. It truly is the foundation for everything. Whilst I generally recommend no alcohol on your TTC journey, if you do choose to have a glass of prosecco (or whatever your favourite Christmas tipple is), make sure you have plenty of water before and after.

3. Fertility-friendly festive foods

Christmas is brimming with foods that can actually support your fertility journey, so make the most of these! Incorporate walnuts, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, into your salads or as a snack. Salmon, another Christmas favourite, is one of the best sources of omega-3 available. Healthy fats are not just important for fertility but if you do get pregnant they are crucial for a baby’s brain development during pregnancy. Indulge in sweet potatoes, packed with vitamin A, vital for reproductive health as well as your immune system during the colder season. Pomegranates, with their vibrant seeds, are not only delicious but also known to promote fertility and reproductive health.

4. Mindful eating during parties

Navigating holiday parties can be challenging, but it's not impossible. Before heading out, have a nourishing snack to curb hunger, ensuring you don’t overindulge on unhealthy options. While at the party, focus on conversations and connections rather than food. When you do indulge, savour each bite mindfully.

5. Prioritise self-care

Amidst the hustle and bustle, remember to prioritise self-care. Stress management plays a pivotal role in fertility. Practice relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises. Taking time for yourself amidst the chaos can make a significant difference in your overall well-being.

6.  Supportive supplements

Consult your healthcare provider or nutritionist about supplements that can complement your fertility treatment. Often, the holiday season can disrupt your routine, making it challenging to obtain all necessary nutrients solely from food. Supplements like folic acid, Vitamin D, and antioxidants can provide valuable support and should be a firm part of your routine.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
